1/9/2023 0 Comments Sonic cd soundtrack comparison![]() It has a hell of a lot more memorable tracks and it's much more fun to listen to outside of the game. How much work and heart went into a soundtrack like that?īelieve what you want, but I personally think the Japanese soundtrack has a lot more going for it. So really, this just shows that they never gave a ****. Whatever the reason was, we never heard it definitely. After all, there always had to be something wrong with the localization of any given game in the 90s. My personal opinion is that they changed the soundtrack for ****s and giggles because they could. I don't know the first thing about the whole sampling business, but if it were an issue, it certainly wouldn't have constituted creating an almost completely different soundtrack. Of course, then there's the argument of licensing for samples they used in a few tracks of the Japanese version, such as from "Work that Sucker to Death". I wouldn't be surprised if this were the case, given the sloppy job they did of implementing the new soundtrack into the game. There was the supposed justification that Americans wouldn't like the more techno-flavored (read: varied) soundtrack, and that it would be more pleasing to our inferior American ears to listen to generic rock tracks for an entire game. I have heard several explanations as to why the soundtrack was changed, all of them abysmally stupid. From artwork changes, to complete removal of certain gameplay aspects, to translations probably written by an autistic five-year-old, localized games during the 90s were plagued with a myriad of issues that arose either because executives thought that "Americans wouldn't get it" or because of the constant "THINK OF THE CHILDREN" attitude that is ever-present in society. Like most decisions related to the localization of Japanese video games at the time, the decision to replace Sonic CD's soundtrack was based on some retarded decision. The only plus to this is that you occasionally get to hear tracks from a much better soundtrack while playing the American version.Ĥ) The reason for changing the soundtrack was retarded. Really, it's just lazy, and there's really no excuse for it. The lazy assholes couldn't be bothered to even figure out how to swap the past version tracks, so there's this jarring discrepancy between the past themes and the present and future themes of any given stage. It's pretty much 1/3 Japanese and 2/3 American. ![]() Let's take a look at the American soundtrack for a moment. From that perspective, I can't blame them." "They had all been playing the Japanese version for weeks or months before our version hit the streets, so it was like we replaced the music to Star Wars after the movie had been out for a while. I was going to compare this to changing the music in Star Wars, but then I realized that Nilsen already did: At the very least, he did try to insert some aspects of the original music into his own. ![]() Granted, you can't blame Nilsen completely, as there was likely some direction from the higher-ups given the reason for the music change, which I will get into later. My favorite example will always be Stardust Speedway, where Nilsen got it in his head that he should compose something that would be more fitting as background music for Sonic dying from asphyxiation in deep space than anything else. But then someone comes along and takes your painting and is all like "haha dick your mountains are wrong," and he proceeds to redraw said mountains and distribute your painting in a way you never intended it to be seen. Anyway, you think this landscape is great - your best work yet. You may or may not paint, but frankly I don't care. For example, let's say you paint a landscape. Taking away a certain original aspect of a piece of artwork is, in my opinion, disrespectful. Maybe you're not the type that sees video games as art, but I do. Sonic CD was meant to be played with the Japanese soundtrack. ![]() Respecting the intentions of the creators and all that.
