The last lyric from this verse can be interpreted two ways: the "purse of a different kind" can be referring to the constable, him telling her that he'd let her go if she did to him what she did to the lawyer. The constable asked her to empty her bag and her purse ("she spilled her purse and her bag and held a purse of a different kind") ![]() ![]() An ingenuine depiction of what sex and love are.Īfter the lawyer leaves, the girl cleans herself up and hears a crash at the door ("after he had left, she was fixing her face in a compact, there was a terrible crash") The local constable had heard of the affair and had arrived to arrest her. This corresponds to the chorus, both the virgin and the lawyer's wife's relationship with the lawyer being a "caricature of intimacy". The lawyer's wife probably knows about the affair but chooses to stay with him for his money.
